Tarawih Prayers in Times Square: A Symbol of Ramadan Spirit in the Heart of New York City

The call to taraweh prayer echoed through Times Square in Manhattan, New York, a bustling hub typically filled with tourists and visitors. For the fourth time since its inception in 2022, the Tarawih prayers were held in this iconic location, marking a unique celebration of Ramadan in the heart of the city. The event began with the call to prayer broadcast over loudspeakers at sunset, followed by the distribution of food for Maghrib and Isha prayers. This year’s gathering was particularly special as it was the first time the event was streamed live on Facebook, allowing a global audience to witness the spiritual moment.

Despite the freezing temperatures, which dropped to as low as minus 2 degrees Celsius, the Tarawih prayers drew a large crowd. The atmosphere grew even more vibrant as the night progressed, with hundreds of attendees braving the cold to participate in the prayers. The sight of worshippers praying in Times Square, surrounded by towering billboards and flashing advertisements, captured the attention of both locals and tourists alike. Many recorded the event, sharing videos and photos across social media platforms.

However, the event has not been without controversy. Some critics have questioned the appropriateness of holding religious prayers in such a public and commercial space, deeming it unsuitable for worship. In response, prominent New York Islamic figure Samsi Ali, originally from Indonesia, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “As someone who studies Islam, I have never seen anyone violate Sharia by praying Tarawih in a public square. This is about making a statement to our fellow New Yorkers—that we exist, we are here, and we are part of this community,” he explained.

The New York City government has supported the event by granting permits for public worship activities, ensuring the freedom to practice religion in public spaces. This permit allows the Muslim community to gather for one day in a designated location, fostering inclusivity and cultural diversity in the city.
