From Plane Crash to Rescue: The Struggle of Five Passengers in the Amazon Rainforest. Five people in Bolivia survived after their plane made an emergency landing in a crocodile-infested swamp in the Amazon rainforest.
They survived for 36 hours on the wreckage of the plane before being rescued. The incident began when the small single-engine plane carrying six people was flying from the Bolivian city of Baures to Trinidad.
While in the air, the plane suddenly experienced problems and crashed into the swamp. After the plane made an emergency landing and flipped over, the five passengers climbed onto the fuselage to escape the water filled with wild animals.
The pilot believes the smell of kerosene leaking from the plane helped keep predators away. Without food and clean water, they survived on only a small amount of cassava flour brought by one of the passengers.
They were eventually found by local fishermen who then alerted rescue teams. Wilson Afilia, Director of the Benny Regional Emergency Operations Center, said the five victims were found in very good condition. The Benny region is known for having very limited road access, so locals often rely on air taxis as their main mode of transportation.
