Teen Outruns Attacker During Morning Run in Murfreesboro Park
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) – On Monday morning, an 18-year-old woman was jogging when a stranger attacked her from behind. She managed to fend off the assailant by employing self-defense techniques until he fled the scene.
Currently, women visiting Oaklands Park mention that they’re taking extra precautions. This applies to Torrie Hatch as well, who enjoys strolling through the park during her midday break.
“It definitely makes you consider things more carefully,” Hatch stated.
The Murfreesboro Police reported that just hours following the attack, the suspected perpetrator, Xavier Carter, aged 23, was apprehended after committing robbery at a convenience store. He faces charges including kidnapping, sexual assault, and theft. Currently, he remains in custody with a bond set at $30,000.
“It’s truly heartbreaking because we seem to hear about this situation more frequently regarding women who are attempting to make positive choices for their health and well-being but end up being assaulted,” Hatch stated.
The Murfreesboro Police Department states that they will be boosting patrol efforts and mentioned they would introduce an additional mobile camera at this park.
“Whenever incidents occur in any section of the city, we see enhanced patrols. Officers will pay closer attention to similar scenarios, taking steps to deter such occurrences in the future,” stated Lt. Stephen Luter.
The police aimed to calm public concerns by emphasizing that such occurrences are extremely uncommon.
“This falls into the category of being one in a million,” Luter stated.
It turned out that among a million, there was one who knew how to fight back.
“Whether it be karate or jujitsu or some extra training that you do outside of the norm, to make sure that you’re ready for these situations whenever they arise,” Luter said.
The police additionally suggest informing friends before going for a jog and staying vigilant, with the advice of using only one earphone.
“It’s great for her. I’m thrilled that she managed to apply the skills she had to escape, since not everyone has that fortune,” Hatch stated.
