Elderly Cashier's Timeless Spirit Shines Behind the Register

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPFI) — Pauline Volpi has been a constant presence at the Stop & Shop located on Atwood Avenue in Cranston for four decades now.

The cherished cashier is recognized for wearing chunky-framed spectacles at work and owns multiple pairs in different hues to complement her attire.

“Regardless of what I wear, I always have the matching colored glasses,” she clarified.

However, people who frequently encounter Volpi at the supermarket might be unaware that she actually doesn’t require them at all.

[The glasses] are purely decorative,” she stated. “I don’t require actual functional glasses — at least not right now.

This summer, Volpi, who is set to turn 89, has observed throughout the years that customers tend to look for her checkout lane.

“She remarked, ‘I must come across as nice since I speak to them as if they were my buddies.’”

It’s also something that store manager Rick Fraielli has observed.

I believe she has numerous loyal customers who prefer to checkout exclusively at her register,” he stated. “She’s an excellent individual.

Volpi informed 12 News that she feels quite comfortable working behind the counter and has no intentions of slowing down shortly.

It keeps my mind active,” she stated. “As long as my mind remains sharp, I plan on continuing to work.

The key to Volpi’s extended and joyful existence is straightforward.

I rely heavily on prayer and visits to the doctor,” she stated. “Those are my main actions.
