Clearfield Postpones Vote on Licensing Fees for Skills Game Machines

CLEARFIELD, Pa. (WTAj) – The Clearfield Borough Council planned to hold a voteThursday evening on a proposed ordinance requiring businesses to obtain a permit before operating Pennsylvania Skill Games machines.

Nevertheless, the council opted against voting on any matters during their gathering since they did not have sufficient attendance to establish a quorum. There were four members present out of the total eight positions, though only six spots are presently occupied.

The regulation mandates that proprietors and sellers of these devices must initially seek a permit from the municipality and pay a $750 charge prior to their activation.

Currently, business proprietors such as Jason Holencik, owner of The After Dark located nearby, must await the council’s verdict. According to him, he has discussed this matter with several other establishments and none were informed regarding the possible new ordinance prior to it being placed on the agenda.

They’ve really taken many of the local business owners who use these machines by surprise,” Holencik stated. “This unexpected response has left quite a few of them struggling since our regular conversations with them indicate this was crucial for their survival amid increasing expenses. Taking away part of what they rely on to keep their businesses afloat seems rather foolish.
