European leaders have voted in favor of an Arab plan for the development of Gaza and avoiding the displacement of Palestinians from the territory
European leaders have voted in favor of an Arab plan for the development of Gaza and avoiding the displacement of Palestinians from the territory. The plan, which will cost the equivalent of 53 billion dollars, was proposed by Egypt and supported by Arab leaders.
However, the plan was opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, who already have their own divisions to turn Gaza into a riviera in the Middle East.
Quoted from the BBC international on Saturday, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy and Britain welcomed the Egyptian plan. They called the plan to rebuild Gaza over 5 years as something realistic. In their statement, they said the proposal promised rapid and sustainable improvements to the miserable living conditions of the people of Gaza.
The plan also calls for Gaza to be temporarily led by an independent committee of experts, and for international peacekeepers to be deployed to the region. The committee will also be responsible for overseeing humanitarian aid and managing Gaza’s affairs temporarily under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority. The proposal was drawn up amid growing concerns that the fragile Gaza ceasefire agreement could collapse after the first phase which lasted for 6 weeks.
Lastly on March 1 Israel itself has blocked aid entering the territory to. Pressure Hamas to accept the United States proposal for a temporary extension of the ceasefire. That is so that more hostages held in Gaza will be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
But Hamas insists that the second phase of the ceasefire that would see a full withdrawal of Israeli troops must begin as agreed. Israel will send a negotiating team to Qatar on Monday to take part in talks on extending the ceasefire.
The Arab plan for the future of Gaza is an alternative to Trump’s idea of the United States taking over the territory and transferring the population of Gaza.
Egypt introduced the plan at an emergency Arab League meeting on Tuesday And it was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, but the White House and Israel’s Foreign Ministry considered the Egyptian-sponsored plan doomed to failure.
